The Guamá Bridge is key to one of the largest-ever urban-expansion, infrastructure projects in the State of Pará, linking Belem to the Port of Vila do Conde and other nearby towns. The project includes 66 km of highway and a total of 4.57 km of bridges.
The Guamá Bridge has a total length of almost 2 km which includes two approach viaducts of 742m and 653m and a central, three-span, 582.5m cable-stayed bridge with a central span of 320 m. The deck accommodates two road lanes plus an emergency path and two pedestrian walkways.
The two, 102m high, pairs of concrete pylons were erected utilising two construction methods. Up to the 74.5m level they were slip-formed and the remainder was completed by climb-forming.
The original design envisaged the cast in-situ method for the deck construction, but time constraints, environmental conditions and the advantages of eliminating falsework, led to the choice of pre-cast segmental erection.
The 69 pre-cast, box girder segments were manufactured in industrial scale at the 72,000 m² prefabrication yard, together with the approach viaduct beams, piles and other concrete elements. State-of-the-art casting and curing methods enabled concrete strength of 20 MPa after only 12 hours, facilitating the production and stockpiling of segments.
The 145 ton pre-cast segments were floated out to the piers on barges and lifted 30m up to the deck level by a system of hydraulic jacks acting from an overhead truss, cantilevered on the previously erected segment. (The first deck segment on either side of each pylon was cast in-situ). After alignment of the segments they were post-tensioned to the structure, followed by the installation of the stay cables through the pair of specifically angled form-tubes cast-in on the lateral extremities of the box segment.
On completion of this erection sequence, the topography and the loading of the deck was fine-adjusted using hydraulic regulating jacks applied on the anchorages at the lower extremity of the stay-cables.
The approach viaducts have typical spans of 45 m, and the decks are composed of pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete “I” beams, connected by transverse beams and supporting a continuous upper concrete slab.
