...nearly orthogonal net of main disjointedness, divided into two types, which caused the formation of an unsteady dihedral which threatened to collapse...
The Paganella calcareous massif, which is more than 2000 m. high over the sea level, and its spurs, are the western side of the valley of the river Adige, north of Trento. The upstream mountainside of Zambana Vecchia centre is formed by quaternary loose materials up to the level of about 500 m., and above it there are sub vertical rocky walls that are cut into Noric dolomites at the base, and into Lias grey limestone on the top.
These rocky massifs were interested by a system of sub-vertical fractures that defined a nearly orthogonal net of main disjointedness, divided into two types, which caused the formation of an unsteady dihedral which threatened to collapse.
For the realization of this project Tensacciai supplied anchors with nominal load of 900 KN, sloping on the horizontal line for 7-10° for a total length of about 60 m., anchored in intact rock areas above the fractures which isolated the dihedral. The anchors bond length was 10-15 m.
The anchors were pre-assembled with 6 strands and they were protected by a PVC pipe in the free section; those at the basis were active, that is pre-stressed up to the nominal load of 900 KN; those at the top were semi-passive, that is pre-stressed up to a fraction of the nominal load which decreased upwards.
The peculiarity of the design intervention and the impossibility to approach from the valley the two working areas (the basis and the top of the dihedral) brought about the necessity to use scaffoldings anchored to the rocky wall from where the foundation and consolidation works could be carried out.
