Arch bridge over the Twente canal

published: 06 07 2005
The existing double railway bridge was too low and too old. The crossing with the Twente canal was too low; the bridge was technically at the end of its lifetime. A unique opportunity to design and build another railway cable-stayed bridge in the Netherlands.

The project was difficult due to the extreme short time between presentation of the contract and realisation of the project. While the arch was still being welded together and lifted up for welding, the stay cables were installed with some overlength. The stressing was difficult because the deformation of the bridge during stressing was different than expected. Intensive discussions with the designer/main contractor resulted in this beautiful arch bridge.

The stay structure - "TSR15" Tensacciai type - consists of 8 pairs of stays : each one consists of 31 strands, with a diameter of 15.7 mm. - Fptk 1860 N/mm2, hot galvanized and individually protected in HDPE. The strand is also protected by external HDPE sheath; no injection of the sheaths. The anchors are injected with hot wax. The fixed anchorages have been positioned in the deck and the adjustable anchorages in the arch for tensioning operations and final adjustment. The latter operation was performed using monostrands jacks. The final adjustments were made with adjustable anchorages.
