The original cable stayed bridge was built between 1970 and 1975.
It was made using as stay cables wire ropes crossing over saddles on the pylon.
Unfortunately, works were made in worst conditions, leaving few indications about structure, erection and construction details.
In the following years, due to the civil war, it was not possible to give adequate maintenance to the structure and moreover the bridge underwent an anomalous traffic of military tanks which lead to unforeseen loads and tensions.

Everything led to the collapse of one stay cable in 1990.
A rough reparation was made, allowing the bridge to keep its functionality.
11 years after, a deep action of rehabilitation and maintenance was made.

It was completed in different steps, as follows:

- Reparation and strengthen of the top of the towers, placing a new steel saddle system.
- Placing of anchorages and temporary stay cables made of strands
- Progressive removal of old damaged wire rope stay cables
- Placing of anchorages and permanent stay cables made of strands
- Removal of temporary stay cables
- Final adjustment of stays, with monitoring of forces and useful clarifications of actions on the bridge
- Full maintenance of concrete and steel existing parts of the bridge

The stay cables - "TSR15" Tensacciai type - installed on the bridge were made of 28 - 43 - 55 and 61 strands. Strand was 15.7 mm diameter with fptk 1860 MPa, hot dip galvanized and individually protected in HDPE. The bundle of strands is also protected by external HDPE sheath. The anchorage are injected with wax. Fixed anchorages are placed on the pylon while the adjustable anchorages are on the deck, where final adjustment took place.
