The structure stands on the Tanaro river between the current railway bridge of the Turin-Genoa line and the Cittadella highway road bridge, permitting a sensible improvement of the traffic flow from and to the Turin-Piacenza motorway in the town’s western sector.
The Tiziano” bridge represents just one of the many interventions to repair damages caused by the flood events dating back to November 1994.
Some of the design constraints conditioning the engineering and construction aspects were:
span lengths of 25m. or a multiple thereof, to permit aligning the piers with those of the railway bridge located at about hundred meters upstream of the Tiziano;
a maximum deck depth of 2.35 m., to connect the new structure in altimetrically proper fashion to the existing street system in a strongly urbanized area of the town, while still assuring a one meter clearance above the 200 year high water.
Taking account of the constraints set forth above, it was decided to build the structure with a continuous beam of four spans 50 m. long, consisting of two 2.35 m. deep single-light boxes with 0.40 m. webs, set side by side and solidly joined longitudinally along the upper slab. Each box constituting the deck was built of prestressed concrete, using mixed prestressing, in part traditional with solidizing, in part external.
