Tensacciai started to develop its technology for cable-stayed bridges in the eighties. The first cable-stayed bridge was built in 1980.
The earliest experiences and the first studies were based on a system of wedge-resin coated anchorages. This system, which led to excellent results, enabled very compact anchorages to be developed, featuring high performance levels since epoxy resin is a very effective damper of the fatigue stress of strands.
Later, in the early nineties, the technology of the anchorage based on simple mechanical anchoring was investigated. This solution became necessary since Tensacciai wished to use wax-coated strands, protected by individual polyethylene sheaths, and because of the technical requirement that it should be possible to replace individual strands anytime.
Now this is the most used technical solution.
The Tensacciai “TSR” stay cable system consists of a bundle of parallel strands, dia. 15,7 mm, singularly galvanised, waxed and hdpe coated, anchored with the use of special mechanical wedges.
From the technological point of view there are no limits to the use of strands with different specifications, however the dia. 15,7 mm strand is currently the best balance between performance and cost. Starting out from the dia. 15,7 mm strand, stay cables of several sizes can be obtained, from the smallest (e.g. the 3TSR15) to the largest and most complex ones (e.g. the 127TSR15), according to a principle of modularity.
Each Tensacciai stay cable type “TSR” is made of a fixed anchorage and an adjustable one, provided with a nut where to make all necessary load regulations after first installation. Anchorages can be also provided with mono-strands or annular load cells to constantly monitor acting loads during lifetime of the bridge.
Tensacciai can also supply more sophisticated devices (i.e. different types of sensors) for a full monitoring of stay cables together with bridges during expected lifetime.
Free length of cable is provided with black or coloured hdpe sheathing, with a double helicoidal rib to reduce vibrations induced by rain and wind actions.
Corrosion protection is guaranteed by use of strands with triple level of protection while anchorages are covered with a local injection of high protection petroleum wax; anchorages can be installed with a special protection treatment.

“TSR” stay cables are assembled on site by threading and stressing strands one by one by means of Tensacciai special monostrand jack.
If necessary, adjustment to the design load is carried out using a special Tensacciai annular jack acting on the adjustable anchorblock.

Tensacciai “TSR” stay cables have been tested according the most severe International Recommendations, giving satisfactory results. They are continuously improved and subjected to our campaign of Research & Development.
